How I became a foodie

I decided to write this article because I have noticed a strange pattern in the kitchen. Many people who want to get into cooking or simply become more proficient fail at it due to lack of appetite and bad eating habits. This is very sad, but it's understandable why this happens: many people grow up with parents who don't cook often and when they do, they cook food that tastes bad. This really screws up their palette. But there are also parents who cook for their kids and yet these kids don't grow up to love cooking or even eating good food. I guess it's destiny huh?

In this article, I would like to explain how I became involved in food and cooking. It all started when I was a kid.  I come from a family where everybody was cooking all the time. My dad is an excellent cook and he always encouraged me to try his food (he will be unhappy if I tell you that I didn't like some of it) while my mom was more into baking. I remember eating scones, pies, cakes and other sweet stuff from a very early age. I always liked eating a lot and it's a good thing that my parents didn't restrict our meal choices.

Working into restaurants

My first restaurant job was at the age of 16 in a hotel restaurant.  I was washing dishes for the first few months, then I moved to buffet service. It was there that I started cooking my own stuff. I would cook vegetables and fruits on different ways with different sauces and dressings.  I guess I was a natural born cook, because after a few weeks I became the boss of buffet service and soon enough I was cooking for the whole hotel.

Then, I got a job in a local restaurant where my responsibilities increased. I started from kitchen porter to assistant chef in just one year. There were some good chefs who taught me a lot and some even offered a job in their own restaurants. I decided to stick with the restaurant where I had worked for a while already. Still, after a year working there, I became head chef at the age of 19.

My restaurant was becoming more popular by the day and many local residents started frequenting it. We were also getting a decent amount of tourists. It was a very cool time to work there, many cooks would come just to watch me cook and learn from me. It wasn't always that easy, though. Sometimes I had to think hard how to incorporate certain ingredients into the dishes so they would taste good together.

Can you learn to love cooking?

But what if you were never exposed to cooking at an early age like I was? Is it possible for you to still learn to cook and enjoy it?  Well, if you are motivated enough, I believe it is possible. But you have to take one thing into consideration - your palate will never be as good as someone who grew up around food.

That being said, if you want to enjoy cooking and eating good food, all you have to do is cook for yourself. The first few dishes you make might not be anything special. But, with time, your palate will start recognizing the spices and flavors of different foods. Soon enough, cooking will become a part of your life and you will learn to cook tasty food for yourself and others.

If you are unable to love cooking and have the disposable income, you might want to look into meal delivery services. These services  will actually cook your food for you and deliver it right to your door. Many of them will send you a box of ingredients and recipes so all you have to do is simply prepare the food according to their instructions. Are you ready to start cooking?

If you are still having doubts,  I would like to tell you one thing. Cooking is actually very easy and there are many recipes online that are easy to prepare. I tried many of them before, while learning how to cook myself, and I can assure you that it's not difficult what so ever. So, let go of the stress and start cooking!
